Getting in shape for summer

Good day there friends!! It is actually a pretty glorious day here today in unpredictable South Wales and I for one am very happy about this.

I wanted to put a post together that isn’t necessarily a ‘weight loss’ post but more of a ‘stop being a greedy unhealthy git and get your arse in shape before bikini season’ post… but I couldn’t really title that… I don’t own a set of weighing scales and I don’t have a goal weight, all I want is to look in the mirror and be really happy with what I see and to feel like I have more energy on a daily basis.

So this summer my husband and I will be travelling to two of my absolute FAVOURITE places on the planet – California, Maryland and Orlando, Florida. *hears choir of angels singing in head*

Yes friends, we are off to see my family-in-law and then to DISNEY!!! You have no idea how excited I am right now!

 

I have been forewarned that it will be very very hot over there at the time we are going and I am not complaining, I love the hot weather. But over the Winter and Springtime I haven’t been very good at keeping up with my fitness or general nutrition so I thought now would be a good time to start in prep for our holiday.

My first port of call was to look at my diet and make a few adjustments – eat more fruit and substitute bad snacks for good. I work in an office where there is a constant supply of biscuits and up until recently I have been taking full advantage of that, my sugar intake must have been through the roof! So I thought what can I do to satisfy my sweet cravings and keep myself going through the afternoon?

I now take an apple and a banana and a granola bar with me every single day. My favourite (of the more healthy variety) is the Nature’s Path organic ‘Nice and Knobbly’ trail mix bar. I don’t have a picture to show you because I’ve eaten them all but I have ordered 2 more boxes today. The other bar I absolutely love but is rather more expensive is the Kind bars. Particularly the dark chocolate and sea salt nut bar, I did try the maple syrup one but it had a funny taste to it.

LOOK HOW NOMMY IT IS!!!!

I promise you it’s every bit as yummy as it looks, but at £1.29 per bar it’s not really a daily snack, more of a treat snack. The sea salt really sets it all off and it’s totally dairy free which is always a big bonus for me 😀

For lunch I’ll often take some soup in with me – my current favourite is carrot, leek and potato with some soy cream in and blended til smooth. It’s especially yummy with a wholewheat toasted pitta and some lactofree cheese.

Alternatively I’ve taken in something which is leftover from a dinner I’ve made recently that I find particularly scrummy. Moroccan spiced couscous with chicken thighs, or if I’m taking it into work for lunch – with ham. OR if like today I didn’t really fancy any meat a fried egg with it was delicious. And of course (Although possibly not super healthy) drizzled with Franks Buffalo wing sauce haha. I love this stuff, I chuck it on so many things particularly if they include egg. I prep the couscous with tumeric, cumin, chilli, salt and pepper and toast up some nuts and fruit in a little olive oil. I don’t even mind if they burn a bit, it’s all good flavour.

My favourite dinner at the moment has been a baked sweet potato, topped with a little vioLife ‘cheese’ grated and some tuna mixed with egg free mayo and a little lemon juice. I don’t seem to have an issue with fresh egg but egg in mayonnaise or pasta, which I assume is powdered egg, doesn’t tend to agree with me. I usually pair this with a rocket and babyleaf salad dressed with a little olive oil and lemon juice. It’s a simple dinner but super tasty and full of goodness.

Aside from tea and coffee (which I cannot live without) I pretty much just drink water on a daily basis. The best thing I’ve discovered recently for making sure I drink enough water is an app called Plant Nanny. It’s super cute and great for reminding you to keep drinking. The more you drink and log in the app, the more likely your plant is not to die 😛

My newest plant is called Eddie… I am slowly running out of names for my plants so I’d welcome any suggestions!

I’m really pleased I’ve managed to drag myself back into a workout routine as well. I’ve been paying for the gym for months without going which is such a waste, so now I’m working on building it into my weekly life so I make it a habit.

I can’t run. There, I’ve said it, it’s out in the open.  I look like a divvy when I run for a start and because I have a slight pigeon chest it just doesn’t allow for a full lung capacity so even before the rest of me gives up, my lungs will when I run. So when I go to the gym I use all the machines I can that don’t involve running and it seems to work for me. I start with the stationary bike, move to the elyptical, the ab crunch machine and then … I don’t even know what to call it but it works your arms, shoulder and the top of your back. The whole thing takes around 30-40 mins, I will aim to build this up but I don’t want to overdo it so soon after just getting back to the gym.

I then make the short drive home and do a video workout which I’ve recently discovered on Blogilates’ Youtube channel – 6 minutes to a sexy booty!

I both love and hate this workout. My goodness does it burn!! It really takes a lot of work and I haven’t managed to follow 100% of the steps but I’m getting there and I can certainly feel it working.

So that’s what I’ve been doing lately to get myself ready for summer, my main goal being to tone up and create a glow from within by fuelling my body with good and nutritional food. Hope this inspires some of you 🙂
